Sean the Seal

Sean the Seal

Greetings from Holyhead,

Yesterday I made the move from Pwllheli to Holyhead on Anglesey. This was to be a good 60 mile day but listening to the forecasts and looking at the weather it was going to be a low wind day.

I set off from Pwllheli two and half hours after low water so I knew I would have enough to exit the marina. Well the forecast was spot on and we had no wind so we set the course and motored off toward Bardsey Island. There was something disturbing the water off to my port side and as I stood up a small head appeared and it was that of a seal, he came back a couple of times and when I was on the phone to my girlfriend he appeared once again and he got the nickname of Sean, so if you are in the area keep an eye out for the little chap.

I made it around Bardsey Island which has some considerable over falls and then pointed for the next turn which was at the South stack, thankfully about 10 miles from Bardsey the wind decided to make an appearance and blowing about a force 3 – enough to have the sails up and shut the engine off for a short while.

By the time I made the South stack the wind had totally gone and being so close to the finish I decided I would motor round the corner and into port. Thankfully the fast ferry had crossed in front of me and the slow ferry was entering the harbour as I was still a couple of miles away so I didn’t have them to worry about.

We made it in and moored up in time for dinner and bed.

Until next time

Alex
